COVID-19: Transmission mechanisms

Let's prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 by knowing the mechanisms that transmit this virus

The virus that causes COVID-19 is transmitted mainly from person to person through respiratory droplets that we produce when we speak, cough, or sneeze. A contagion occurs when respiratory droplets from an infected person settle in the mouth or nose of an uninfected person. For this reason it is recommended to maintain a healthy distance since it is less likely that these respiratory droplets are deposited on someone at a greater distance. It is even recommended to cough or sneeze into a handkerchief or covering our mouth with the inside of the elbow. By performing these actions, the respiratory droplets are trapped there and not in the air or on other surfaces.

It is believed that the virus can also be spread indirectly by touching infected surfaces and then touching the mouth, nose or eyes. This has caused a lot of anxiety when going to the supermarket, ordering food at home or even receiving parcels or mail. However, recent evidence tells us that the risk of this happening is minimal. In general, it is always good to wash your hands after touching shared objects and before touching your face to avoid the transmission of any microorganisms.

Finally, it is important for you to know that the virus is not only transmitted from a person with symptoms to a healthy person. The virus is also transmitted from an asymptomatic or presymptomatic person. Asymptomatic people are those who become infected with the virus but never develop symptoms. Presymptomatic people, on the other hand, are those who do not currently have symptoms at this time but will eventually have them. In both cases, there is a risk that they will infect others in the same way as someone who is sick.
