First apothecaries in Nuevo León

Learn about the history of the first drugstores that existed in Nuevo León and the country

The apothecaries were the places where the medicines were prepared by means of vegetable, animal and mineral products, right there they were commercialized and gave rise to the first patent medicines.

At the beginning of the 19th century, in Nuevo León there was only the apothecary of the Hospital del Rosario, therefore, in 1835, Dr. José Eleuterio González opened the chair of Medicine and Pharmacy, with a duration of four years, with the purpose of training Professional apothecaries, which were so lacking in northeastern Mexico.

The first students were Mariano Serna, Román Manrique, Jesús Sánchez and Vicente Sepúlveda, who later opened their own apothecaries, Serna in Linares, Manrique in Saltillo, Sánchez in Victoria, and Vicente Sepúlveda would take care of the Hospital's apothecary.

In 1851, the Health Council determined that no one could exercise this branch of medical sciences without their authorization, therefore, was given the task of issuing permits to open apothecaries, which had a cost of 40 pesos.

By 1870 the list of apothecaries that worked were the following:

  • Apothecary Apothecary
  • San Antonio Apothecary
  • Theater Apothecary
  • Bolívar apothecary
  • Oak apothecary
  • Mears Apothecary
  • Apothecary Apothecary
  • Eagle Apothecary
  • Botica Sepúlveda (from the Hospital)
  • Lion apothecary
  • Apothecary of Linares

For their operation, it was required that they have the following substances:

  • Sublimed and washed sulfur
  • Animal coal
  • Distilled water
  • Arsenious acid
  • Benzoic acid
  • Strychnine
  • Morphine
  • Atropine
  • Ammonia
  • Tinctures
  • Oak Acorns
  • Hemlock Plasters
  • Ointments and ointments
  • Tolú Pills
  • Medicinal wines

There were medications considered "dangerous" or "poisonous," which could not be supplied without a prescription.

In 1881 and 1888, Dr. González published "A speech and a catalog of classified plants, aimed at students of the Monterrey School of Medicine", and "Oral Lessons in Medical and Therapeutic Matters", which emphasizes the importance of the study of the regional pharmacopoeia, and the therapeutic use of it.
