A space for study: History of the Medicine Library

The Library is one of the most representative buildings of the School of Medicine

From the origins of the School of Medicine, there was concern about the provision of support books for the teaching of medical sciences, therefore, the School Library was created in 1886: “Today we have this maximum classroom in which to celebrate the Literary functions of the School… a library has begun to be gradually improved ”(Management Report, 1886).

By the year of 1897, the School's library already had 518 volumes, so Mr. José J. Montemayor was hired, who would serve as a librarian.

When the Medical School was installed in its current location, the number of classrooms was insufficient for the different groups, often having to use the hospital's classrooms to teach there.

In such circumstances, the library was assigned to the eastern section of the building, in the basement area, had a large collection of books, which had gradually acquired the administration of the School, as well as donations of doctors graduated from this institution , and a newspaper library.

In 1977 a project was presented for the construction of a new building that housed the Faculty library, construction began in 1978. The progress of the work was slow, and for some years in which the country was in economic crisis, it stopped completely, being enabled until 1992.
