At 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, the 9th Award Ceremony of the Medal "Dr. José Eleuterio González" was held at the University Theater. This is the highest distinction awarded by the Universidad Autónoma of Nuevo León, in conjunction with the School of Medicine and the University Hospital “Dr. José Eleuterio González”, to national and/or foreign people who have excelled at the regional, national or international level based on their assistance, teaching and research works carried out exceptionally in the area of health and medicine for the benefit multiple of society.

The university awards ceremony, in addition to being witnessed by our medical community and relatives of the winners, was made up of the following authorities in the presidium:

Doctors distinguished with the Medal “Dr. José Eleuterio González” 2022

Dr. Jaime de la Garza Salazar; Pioneer in research and innovation in the División de Medicina Oncológica in Mexico. He is considered the father of the use of chemotherapy in the country for the treatment of cancer.

Gereon R. Fink, DM; Internationally recognized for his contributions to neuroscience as Professor and Director of the Clínica de Neurociencia of the University of Cologne, Germany. The recognition was delivered virtually.

Román Garza Mercado, DM; (†) Pioneer in the area of neurosurgery in the State of Nuevo León. Founder of the Neurosurgery Service of the School of Medicine and University Hospital "Dr. José Eleuterio González". The recognition was delivered at the hands of his son Roberto Alan Garza Leonard, MPA.

“Today we are gathered to award for the ninth time the medal that bears the name of the illustrious Dr. José Eleuterio González Mendoza, meritorious of the State of Nuevo León and benefactor of humanity who 163 years ago refounded the School of Medicine, this distinction is awarded to prominent women and men, with a life given to the service of society through their contribution in the area of health” mentioned at the opening of the awards, Edelmiro Pérez Rodríguez, DM.

Mentioning feeling pleased to be invited to the ceremony, Alma Rosa Marroquín Escamilla, DM; indicated that this recognition ("Dr. José Eleuterio González" Medal) rewards humanism, social responsibility, principles, values and also, of course, science [...] Science makes us strong but not better, that is why the doctor, while wiser, must be more educated. Humanism in medicine is redefined with attitudes and actions that have characterized great professionals, including our award winners who show interest and respect for their patient.

“These distinctions are considered to recognize talent at a local, national and international level and are delivered in this ceremony within the framework of Doctor's Day and University Hospital Week in Nuevo León. This is a propitious moment to recognize these exceptional doctors who have deservedly received this university distinction for being worthy representatives of health professionals” stated Santos Guzmán López, DM.
