In memoriam of Ezequiel Enrique Treviño Cavazos, DM.

We regret the sensitive death of Dr. med. Ezequiel Enrique Treviño Cavazos, graduate and professor of our institution in the Department of Ophthalmology.

Dr. med. Ezequiel Enrique Treviño Cavazos

1950 – 2021

He was born in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo León on October 29, 1950. He completed his Bachelor of Medicine at the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) during 1968-1975. He was a fellow of the Department of Preventive Medicine and the Department of Microbiology, of the UANL School of Medicine until 1976. During this time he taught Introduction to Medicine as a teacher. From 1977 to 1980, he specialized in Ophthalmology at the University Hospital (HU) of the Faculty of Medicine (FM) of the UANL.

In 1981, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) awarded him a scholarship to perform the Medical and Surgical Retina Subspecialty at the Ophthalmology Clinic and Retina and Vitreous Department of the University of Mainz from 1981-1983, obtaining in the same University the appointment of Doctor of Medicine degree, with outstanding grade.

Upon his return to Monterrey, he joined as Non-Teaching Professional Staff and in 1985 obtained the Appointment of University Professor assigned to the Department of Ophthalmology of the HU, FM of the UANL and the Regional Center for the Prevention of Blindness, where he developed as a full-time Professor, being the coordinator of the Retina and Vitreous Clinic until 2021.

Within retinal diseases, he showed special interest in clinical and surgical pathologies, especially retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy and retinitis pigmentosa. He was a pioneer in retinal laser treatment and retinal detachment surgery. He participated as an Undergraduate Professor in the Bachelor of Medicine, teaching the topic of diabetic retinopathy. As Postgraduate Professor, he worked in teaching and research at the Retina and Vitreous clinic. He maintained a special interest in research, where he served as postgraduate thesis research coordinator in the Department of Ophthalmology; and adviser of several doctoral theses of doctors of the different specialties of our University Hospital.

He was president of the Monterrey Rotary Club from 1996-1997 and 2010-2011, always promoting an attitude of service towards the Community. He was president of the Nuevo León College of Ophthalmology from 2000-2001 and president of the Northeast Retina Association from 2005-2007. He was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Mexican Society of Ophthalmology. He enjoyed going to National and International Courses, Congresses and Colloquiums, where he shared knowledge with colleagues and friends, participating as coordinator of modules, speaker and commentator in various round tables.

Many generations of ophthalmologists appreciate his teachings and personalized dedication to each one of them, based on his universal knowledge and personal experiences. He dedicated much of his time to the Department of Ophthalmology at HU UANL, as he was passionate about assistance, teaching and research in Ophthalmology. He will be remembered by his family, his friends, the family of the Department of Ophthalmology-HU, the community of ophthalmologists and his patients.
