Professional career of Oliver Welsh Lozano, DM.

An excellent researcher, doctor and professor, who will undoubtedly leave a great void within our institution. We share a little of the professional history of Dr. med. Oliverio Welsh Lozano.

dr med Oliverio Welsh Lozano was born on December 17, 1939 in Montemorelos, Nuevo León. He studied Surgeon and Obstetrician at the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León from 1956 to 1962. He completed an internship at the University Hospital “Dr. José Eleuterio González” in 1963; Specialty in Clinical Pathology from 1964 to 1965 in the same institution; Interned in Internal Medicine at the University Hospital of the University of Michigan from 1965 to 1966; Specialty in Dermatology from 1966 to 1969 in the same institution and Doctorate in Medicine with distinction Magna Cum Laude, at the UANL Faculty of Medicine, 1990.

He worked as a tenured professor of undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the Dermatology Service since 1969, as well as the theoretical practical course of Medical Microbiology from 1972. He was Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies at the UANL School of Medicine from April to December 1971; Head of the Mycology Laboratory in the Department of Microbiology from 1976 to 1996; Deputy chief of the Dermatology Service of the same institution from 1978 to 1991; Deputy Director of Research and Postgraduate Studies at the UANL Faculty of Medicine from 1979 to 1986; Head of the Dermatology Service of the University Hospital from 1991 to November 2003; Founder and Director of the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Dermatological Research from 1998 to 2003 and Coordinator of Basic Research of the Dermatology Service from 2004 to date.

Participó en más de 300 conferencias impartidas en eventos académicos nacional e internacional. Realizó 116 publicaciones en extenso en revistas con factor de impacto, 30 capítulos en libros y 150 publicaciones en resumen en congresos nacionales e internacionales. Fue director y co-director de tesis de especialidad de Dermatología, maestría y de 11 de doctorado. Revisor de artículos en revistas indexadas tales como: Journal Academy of Dermatology, International Journal Dermatology, JAMA, Clinics in Dermatology, PLOS one tropical neglected deseases  y de proyectos del CONACYT. Fue acreedor a 26 premios de investigación entre los que más destacan son: la Medalla “Dr. José Eleuterio González” propuesto ante el Consejo Universitario y otorgado por el Rector (Jesús Ancer Rodríguez, DM.) de la UANL en 2015,  el premio Miguel Otero dado por el Presidente de la República en el Área de Investigación en 2018, el Premio de la Interliga Mundial de Dermatología y el Premio del CILAD. A partir del 2004 fue nombrado como Profesor Emérito Activo de la Facultad de Medicina de la UANL.

Initiator and participant of the lines of research in the Dermatology Service that include: Immune response against intracellular infectious agents and mechanisms of pathogenicity and virulence of bacteria of the genus nocardia, mycobacterium and fungi, as well as Research in dermatological therapeutics.

He was a member of the American Dermatology Association; of the International Society of Dermatology; from the International Board of Clinics in Dermatology; member of the American Academy of Dermatology; European Academy of Dermatology; International Society of Dermatology; and from the International Society of Investigative Dermatology. Member and former president of the Mexican Council of Dermatology; permanent member of the Mexican Academy of Dermatology, AC; full member of the National Academy of Medicine and member of the National System of Researchers, Level III.
