COVID-19: Influenza Vaccine

Influenza is an endemic disease that occurs with a greater number of cases during the winter season in Mexico

In Mexico, a marked decrease in influenza cases has been found after the implementation of health measures against COVID-19. Research studies have shown that, in general, containment measures are useful in reducing the spread of viral respiratory illnesses, mitigating the impact of the current pandemic, and reducing seasonal influenza cases.

On November 3, the 2021-2022 influenza vaccination campaign began in Mexico and, as it was presented simultaneously with the coronavirus vaccination campaign, a variety of doubts have arisen:

Can I get vaccinated against COVID-19 and influenza at the same time?

It is recommended that people who have already received their full course against COVID-19 receive the influenza vaccine soon. If you have not yet been vaccinated against COVID-19 or you have one dose left, it is advisable to wait for the full inoculation to be completed and subsequently apply the influenza vaccine.

Do I need to get a flu shot if I wear a face covering and observe social distancing?

The use of face masks and a healthy distance help protect yourself and others from respiratory viruses (influenza and COVID-19). However, the best way to reduce the risk of getting the flu is to vaccinate everyone 6 months of age and older every year.

Should someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 get the flu vaccine?

No, you should delay flu vaccination and continue your isolation. It is recommended to avoid exposing health personnel and other civilians to the COVID-19 virus.
