COVID-19: Multiorgan effects

In addition to affecting the lungs, the coronavirus also damages other organs of the body

Some people who have become severely ill from COVID-19 experience multi-organ effects or autoimmune conditions on a more prolonged basis. While COVID-19 is thought to primarily affect the lungs, it can also damage other human organs such as the heart, kidneys, and brain. Some health complications that persist after the disease are, among others, the following:

  • Cardiac complications, damage to the heart muscle.
  • Chronic renal deterioration.
  • Consequences of thromboembolic events such as epulmonary embolisms, heart attacks and strokes.
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome (rare).

Although rare, some people, mostly children, have multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS) during or immediately after COVID-19 infection. MIS is a condition in which different parts of the body can become inflamed.

It is important to remember that most people with COVID-19 recover quickly, however, the multi-organ effects mean that it remains important to reduce the spread by following health measures.
